Round Trip to Kotoka, Please

As we prepare for our trip to Ghana, it is safe to say that Mimi and I had no idea what participating in a Global Health Elective would entail. From applications and essays to countless international phone calls, getting approval from both our school and the host program was a bit overwhelming but nonetheless we were granted permission. At that point we figured all we needed was a plane ticket and we'd be smooth sailing. Boy were we wrong! Now we had to secure lodging, and apply for travel visas, amongst other things. Luckily both Mimi and I have family in Ghana so we will be staying with them  and the Ghana Embassy did not take to long in approving our visas.
According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention website on traveling to Ghana, there are certain required/recommended vaccinations necessary to enter the country.  Poor Mimi got 5 in one day! It is also imperative to have malaria prophylaxis medication as sub-saharan Africa has high rates of malaria.

Besides the obvious, here are some items I feel are important to carry along when traveling/studying abroad:

Antidiarrheal Medication (like Imodium)
Overseas Electrical Adapter (how else will you charge your computer?)
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Comfortable waking shoes
Book (for that long flight)

What are some of your favorite things to travel with?
I'm pretty excited and anxious to get this trip started!

  1. I skipped the book and got a Kindle when I moved to Vietnam. It's just so much more feasible.
