Ohemaa: "Queen" in the Akan Language

Ohemaa's MD originally began as an outlet for us to stay in touch with our family and friends while doing a medical elective in Ghana in 2012. We enjoyed writing about our experiences so much that we knew we couldn't stop just because we graduated from medical school. The new and improved Ohemaa'sMD offers a look into the hectic life of medical residency as well as offers health tips and advice from the perspective of young doctors.

I'm a self described "Afropolitan" who loves fashion, home decor, and exploring the beauty of my natural hair. As a child I always desired to care for people in some capacity, and with an interest in health I knew becoming a physician would allow me to help others, particularly minorities and under served populations. Throughout my medical journey I have been blessed in so many ways and am grateful to God for all of my experiences (the good and the bad). A prominent source of strength during these times has been the countless advice and support I have received from friends, peers, and mentors. I hope that through this blog I too can offer some light at the end of the tunnel advice for others, particularly women and minorities. If you can learn from my mistakes then my job is done :)

My name is Jemina but my friends and family call me everything from “Mimi” to “Mina” to simply “J.” As I plan for graduation and a global health elective in Ghana, I realize that a few areas in my life are starting to come full circle. Ever since I was a little girl becoming a doctor and treating patients in Africa has been a life-long ambition of mine.  I've been blessed to follow a path paved with my dreams, but that does not mean it has been easy, rather it simply means that God has been faithful to “make the crooked places straight” (Isaiah 45:2). That is why my goal for this blog is to SHARE my current activities with family and friends who have whispered encouraging words or have uttered prayers for me along the way and INSPIRE young girls to follow their dreams no matter how BIG or unattainable they may seem. Remember God is always bigger than your biggest dream :-).
